Step 1: Understand the Job Description to Tailor your Resume

At its essence, a job description is a blueprint of which specifies what the employer needs. It provides insights into the skills, qualifications, and experiences they value. Before tailoring your resume, read the job description thoroughly to understand what the requirements are.

In most cases, we are so obsessed with applying to the maximum number of jobs in our Job Search that we forget to pay attention to the basics.

Once you start going through the Job Description carefully, you’ll be able to understand what is being asked of you and if your Resume has that or not.

Step 2: Spotting Keywords & Phrases

These are the specific skills, experiences, and competencies that have been peppered throughout the job description. By integrating these keywords into your resume, you’ll kill two birds with one stone.

  • Firstly, you’ll immediately stand out compared to the rest of the applicants in the eyes of the Recruiter as you’d possess the right skills as visible in the Resume.
  • Secondly, you’ll have a much better chance of clearing ATS (or Applicant Tracking Systems) which hunts for such keywords in your Resume to filter candidates and rank them accordinly.

How do you spot them? Start reading the Job Description and pay attention to words or phrases that look like important skills or requirements which the Recruiter has. If they’re a match to your own skillset, perfect! Add them into your Resume.

Step 3: Aligning Your Skills with the Role

We’ve identified the skills, experiences and other keywords that we’re confident are a match to our profile. Now, our Resume needs to exude that confidence too. To align your Resume to the Role, you need to sprinkle these keywords into your Resume.

Where can you add it?

  • Summary section: It is a great place to sprinkle these keywords into as it is also the first section which a Recruiter reads. You’ll learn more in the next step about this.
  • Skills Section: This section acts like a “Keyword Bank” as you can add these keywords here and it also makes it easy for the Recruiter to glance and spot the skills they’re looking for. More on this later.
  • Experience Section: Try changing the language or a couple of words, or adding sentences which contain these keywords. Keep reading to learn more.

Step 4: Refining Your Professional Summary

As mentioned earlier, Summary section is a great place to add these keywords. Located at the beginning of your resume, the professional summary provides a snapshot of your qualifications. Ensure that it resonates with the job’s requirements, emphasizing skills or experiences that the recruiter prioritizes.

As we’ve all heard, a Recruiter only spends, on average, 6 seconds on each Resume so this is a great way to ensure that you’re grabbing their attention immediately with a well-optimized and tailored Summary section.

Step 5: Highlighting Relevant Experiences

When you’re detailing your professional journey, make sure to note down about your experiences in a reverse chronological order with the latest experience first. This practice is highly recommended and makes it easier for the Recruiter to sort through your work experience.

When writing down the responsibilities for each role, this is where you optimize the description based on what the job demands. Add keywords, and mention experiences, achievements and responsibilities you carried out on a daily basis which will be useful for the Recruiter to know and are relevant based on the role you’re applying to.

Step 6: Showcasing Pertinent Skills in your Resume

Time for your skills section, for that, focus on those directly relevant to the job. If the job description emphasizes possessing proficiency in a particular software or tool and you’re adept at it, make sure it’s featured at the top of your skills section.

As mentioned earlier, your “Skills” section in the Resume acts as a keyword bank where you can add the tools, processes and skills which you’re not only good at but these skills are also relevant based on the job you’re applying for.

Bonus: You can also add the skills section at the top of your Resume, just below the Professional Summary, this will make it easy for the Recruiter to glance through the skills and spot the relevant ones without having to skim through the entire document.

Step 7: Fine-tuning Your Education Section

This is most suitable for Freshers who do not have much work experience yet to showcase in their Resume. Your education section is a great place to emphasize your theoretical knowledge.

While your degree remains constant, you can emphasize courses, projects, or extracurriculars that align with the job’s demands. This acts as a great way to not only substitute for not having much work experience (in case of a Fresher), but it also helps form parallels between your education and your work experience and helps increase its relevancy for the Recruiter who might not pay as much attention to the same otherwise.
